About June 4th

The Revolution of 4 June was an uprising in Ghana in 1979

This was unleashed when the then military government, the Supreme Military Council (SMC II) of General FK Akuffo, opened a public trial to Lt. Jerry John Rawlings for attempting to overthrow the government, May 15, 1979, because Mr. Rawlings a junior soldier of the Ghanaian army who, along with other soldiers, had not received their salary.

Mr Rawlings overturned the lawsuit against the government accusing him of mbadive corruption and demanding that his co-defendants be released as he was the sole person responsible for the mutiny. He was incarcerated for conviction. His diatribe touched the entire nation because of mbadive suffering.

On the night of June 3, 1979, junior officers, including Major Boakye Djan, entered the prison where Mr. Rawlings was being held and released him. They apparently drive him to the national radio to make an announcement. The first time the public heard Mr. Rawlings was a statement that Mr. Rawlings had been released by the junior officers and was under their command. He asked all the soldiers to meet them at Nicholson stadium in Burma camp in Accra.

The whole nation has come up. Soldiers gathered senior officers including three former chiefs of state, General F. Akuffo, Ignatius Kutu Acheampong and Afrifa. They were then executed by platoons.

Rawlings was appointed head of the Armed Forces Revolution Council (AFRC) by the rebel subordinate officers charged with leading the country until the completion of the current elections.

Mr Rawlings handed over power to Mrs Hilla Limann in September 1979, but again overthrew Mr Limann on 31 December 1981.

June 4 has since become a landmark in the history of Ghana.
