A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Mr. Abraham Amaliba, said the party plans to take legal action to prevent the Electoral Commission (EC) from embarking on a exercise to establish a new register of voters for 2020 elections.

In March 2019, the EC announced that it would establish a new register of voters for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana.

Prior to this, a limited registration of new voters before district level elections and a referendum will be held in all Commission district offices across the country in May.

The referendum will seek to amend Article 55 (3) of the Constitution to allow District, Municipal and District Directors (DMMCs) to be elected on a partisan basis.

In an interview with Starr FM, based in Accra on Thursday, Amaliba said the NDC was against the EC's plan to establish a new electoral register.

He alleged that this measure constituted an attempt by the EC to deprive some Ghanaians of their rights.

"The circumstances in which Jean Mensa was appointed suggest to her that she owes her allegiance to Akufo-Addo and not to the Ghanaian people. Jean Mensa is putting in place measures to deny most Ghanaians their rights in the name of a new register. NDC intends to lodge a complaint against this new registry, which will deprive most Ghanaians of their rights, "he said.

At the same time, Professor Ransford Gyampo, professor of political science at the University of Ghana, urged the Electoral Commission to abandon the idea of the new register.

According to him, the reasons for the creation of a new register are not strong enough even if the commission reserves the right to create a new role for the polling stations.
