The Democratic National Congress (NDC) has said the opposition party will resist all attempts by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to use technical details to remove Assin North MP Joe Gyaakye Quayson from its functions.
The Cape Coast High Court on Tuesday postponed judgment on the case to July 28, after Joe Gyaakye Quayson had invoked the Supreme Court’s oversight jurisdiction in the matter.
Even though the Supreme Court set its ruling for July 27, NDC National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo said residents of Assin North should not be denied representation as the NPP needs to increase its numbers in parliament.
In an interview with the media after the court, Mr. Ofosu Ampofo stressed that they had identified the machinations against the MP and that the party was very concerned about the direction of the case.
The NDC, he says, were very uncomfortable with the judge’s earlier decision to pass judgment on July 14 and their belief was that there was certain evidence that would have been presented in court. whether he had allowed oral submissions to be made. done before her.
“If he had allowed oral evidence to be produced during the trial, we could have justified why we believe our Member of Parliament for Assin North was also duly and properly elected,” he said.
Mr. Ofosu Ampofo explained to the press that the NDC legal team and the party’s audit committee have thoroughly reviewed the documentation of all those who are domiciled outside the country and are seeking to stand for election in the country. country.
He said: “We went through their documentation and were satisfied. In fact, this committee was chaired by no one other than the current Speaker of Parliament, the Right Hon. Alban Bagbin. The venerable figure scrutinized all of our legal team’s processes to convince the party that Joe Quayson, MP for Assin North, was highly qualified under Ghana’s electoral laws and should stand for election. And again, the issues were even raised before the electoral commission and the commission also ruled on the matter and cleared him even before he applied.
He further argued that going back and forth to court was a ploy to reduce the number of NDC members in parliament.
He says if the Assin North MP’s legal team had the opportunity to make oral submissions, they could provide evidence as to when Joe Quayson actually renounced his citizenship, with all documents attached.
He said: “Our legal team has them and it will go a long way to exonerate him and justify the feelings of the party and why the EC itself accepted the nomination for him to file and challenge.”
He added: “Be careful, this is an election petition, the people of Assin North have lined up from morning till night to elect a member of Parliament of their choice and we will not allow technical details to be used to deprive us of our deputy ”
“We know all the machinations going on. They are very comfortable with the hanging parliament that the country has now and they are trying every means possible, including legal gymnastics, to deprive the NDC of our numbers in parliament. “
Michael Ankomah Nimfah, a resident of Assin North, has filed a petition in the Cape Coast High Court regarding the qualification of the Member of Parliament for Assin North. He said the MP was not qualified to run in the 2020 election at the time he ran for election.
