For the first time in their career, Brewster and Klabo had to try to understand a defeat against North Dakota.
The Bison broke their eight-game losing streak against UND and won the match against the rivalry for the first time since 2004 thanks to a 69-57 victory in front of 1,810 spectators.
"They went out and competed. We have abandoned and abandoned what we do best, "said Klabo, whose 11 points was his second lowest result of the season.
"We need to improve and we have little time to do it," said Brewster. "We are in a funk state right now and have to get out of it."
In the first UND-NDSU match as an opponent of the Summit League, NDSU's defense angered Klabo, the top scorer in the Summit League.
The former Fargo Davies standout finished 3-for-10 on the field. She also had three turnovers and made a mistake in the fourth quarter.
"We knew that (Klabo) was a very good veteran player," said Emily Dietz of the NDSU, who scored 16 points. "In practice, we have constantly talked about being physical and putting it uncomfortable."
Maren Walseth, NDSU coach: "Lexi is definitely the cement of their group. Nobody would be able to limit it. We tried to keep looking at him differently. By holding her back at 11, I thought we had done a good job with her.
The NDSU improved to 6-12 overall and to 3-3 at the top, while the UND fell to 8-12 overall and to 3-4 at the top.
The Bison built the separation at the end of the third quarter, keeping the Hawks at nine points in the third quarter.
After Jill Morton, the UND senior, scored for a three-point game with a time remaining at 3:10 in the third quarter to bring the score to 47-43, the Hawks did not score again in the quarter.
Meanwhile, a training by Sofija Zivaljevic, a corner kick by Michelle Gaislerova in 3 – pointers and a Danneka Voegeli basket inside pushed the Bison 's lead to 54-43.
The Hawks could not make a serious head race after that.
"We need to learn from it and continue," said Klabo. "It's a long conference season. We can also play them at home. We just have to keep improving.
UND was led by the 13 points of Morton. The Hawks had difficulty starting from the 3-point line (2-in-9 versus NDSU's 7-in-13) and could not take care of the ball (18 turnovers led to a NDSU 30-11 in points on turnovers).
The Bison were led by Gaislerova (17 points) and Dietz (16). Gaislerova was 5-in-6 from the 3-point line.
