Nervous investors cite Washington's policy as a central concern

The Schwab survey found that 52% of investors felt bearish, up from 41% a year ago.

Politics in Washington was the main concern cited by respondents (28%). This was followed by uncertainty due to market volatility, 12%; fears of a next correction, 12%; and geopolitical or global macroeconomic problems, 11%.

According to the survey, investors aged 40 to 55 and retirees are the most bearish.

And nearly a third expect the next economic downturn to occur next year, as shown in the Schwab chart below.
