Netflix has become an integral part of our entertainment livelihoods that most subscribers do not even care when the streaming subscription service slightly raises their prices. Fortunately, they are finally looking to give their users new ways to find programs to watch, while making it easy for them to choose something to watch on Saturday night.
After years of Netflix customers asking for the opportunity to choose something to watch at random, the streaming service could finally work. They are testing a new feature that would allow users to play an episode of a random TV show, which will save you time trying to choose an episode to watch.
On top of that, Netflix is also testing a feature that gives users a list of the top 10 popular programs in certain categories to see if they want to watch what everyone is watching.

Netflix Shuffle
First, Android Police (via Mashable) indicates that some viewers are being offered the opportunity to try a new "random" viewing option. Netflix's library does not choose any random title, but you can use the random selection feature of individual TV series to choose a random episode. As you can see above, the random feature has been applied to several shows available in the Netflix library.
The screenshot above comes from the Netflix app of an Android user (for those who are curious it is v7.6.0 build 19 34157). Netflix also released a statement to Mashable regarding testing the new feature:
"We test the possibility for members to play a random episode of different TV series on the Android mobile application. These tests usually vary in duration and region, and may not become permanent. "
This is a solid way for Netflix to ensure that users watch TV shows they have already seen in the same way as if they can watch the show on regular cable TV. And the good news is that you do not have to go back to the main menu to continue choosing random episodes. Here's a screenshot of the app when you watch a show:
It's good to hear that Netflix is testing this feature, but you have to go further by applying it to their entire library. This is what viewers want for a long time and it would certainly save them a lot of time discussing topics to watch.
Top 10 lists
Meanwhile, in the UK, Netflix is testing a new Top 10 feature that shows the most popular shows among users in different categories. The new feature was announced in a letter to shareholders (via Variety), which would be part of Netflix's efforts to improve the transparency of their ratings. The letter says:
"For those who want to watch what others are watching, it can make the choice of titles even easier. After a few months, we will decide whether to finish or develop the test. "
This is another feature that could help viewers to choose programming faster instead of wasting time scrolling through the library. Seeing what others are watching may also reveal headlines that might not show up on a person's home screen depending on his or her usual preferences. Again, it could also only show programs to viewers.
The functionality that Netflix really needs
These two features are apparently just a few of the hundreds of tests that Netflix performs each quarter to determine how to improve the experience of their users. But there is a feature that users have been looking for for a while now, namely that Netflix has not even tested yet: playlists.
If Netflix instituted playlists, users would be able to create their own channels on which they could play various episodes and TV movies. And if they allowed the use of the random function, it would give the impression of a cable to the card with a channel containing all your favorite shows and movies.
But for now, it only remains to wait and see what they have in reserve.
