A chief from the traditional zone of Efutu and Gomoa Adjumako, Ogyeedom Obranu Kwesi Atta VI denied making any allegations of corruption against the chief justice.
In a reply seen by GhanaWeb, Ogyeedom Kwesi Atta VI said he had neither met the Chief Justice nor engaged with him in any way.
“I unequivocally deny any allegations of intentional or actual bribery against a judge, including the Chief Justice whom I have never met or known personally other than seeing him from a distance from the court,” the reply said in part.
“I have since requested a copy of said response to my motion against lawyer Afrifa in which these fabrications and allegations are contained and I will respond appropriately to General Legal Council upon receipt thereof.”
This development comes after Ogyeedom Obranu Kwesi Atta VI asked the General Legal Council for the conduct of an Akwasi Afrifa lawyer.
A copy of the petition which was filed in March this year, spotted by GhanaWeb, said lawyer Afrifa who was consulted to take over a case pending before the Supreme Court for the plaintiff, sought to take further action. money to the applicant to do some ‘gymnastics’ on the case.
Ogyeedom Obranu Kwesi Atta VI pointed out that Afrifa, who was hired to handle a case in the Cape Coast Court of Appeal, had been paid in full out of an agreed sum of GH ¢ 300,000 but subsequently suggested to him [Ogyeedom] to make funds available for what he called “ways and means”.
“In the course of the processing of the case, he [Lawyer Akwasi Afrifa] suggested to me that it was in my best interest, in addition to his fully paid fees, to provide a sum of one hundred thousand dollars (US $ 100,000) to enable him to do ways and means (gymnastics) on my case in order to that we can obtain a favorable decision, ”the petition reads in part.
In response, however, Kwasi Afrifa denied the request. He alleged that Ogyeedom instead told him that his friends suggested that they could influence the Chief Justice with a sum of money.
“At the end of July 2020, the Applicant informed me that friends of his who were closely linked politically had taken him to see the President of the Supreme Court who had agreed to help him win his case on condition that he let me fall as the lawyer in charge of the case. case for him and hire Akoto Ampaw Esq in my stead, ”said Kwasi Afrifa.
“He further informed me that the Chief Justice had demanded a bribe of $ 5,000,000 for a favorable outcome of his case and that he had already paid $ 500,000 to the Chief Justice. He further indicated that he was having difficulty collecting the remainder of the 5,000,000 USD and that I therefore had to reimburse part of the 300,000 GH which had been paid to me as fees because, in accordance with the judge’s advice in chief, he had hired Akoto Ampaw Esq as a lawyer to pursue the case before the Supreme Court, ”Afrifa added.
Moments after GhanaWeb’s post, Ogyeedom Obranu Kwesi Atta VI said in a brief statement that he had never met the Chief Justice.
