A new influenza awareness campaign will encourage Australians in the South to become more interested in spreading the virus as the state continues to grapple with a horrific flu season.
So far this year, there have been around 20,000 confirmed cases of influenza in South Africa, up from around 1,500 at the same time last year.
Nearly 50 people have died from influenza or influenza-related illnesses.
Health Minister Stephen Wade said the new campaign was a timely reminder for everyone to take care of themselves and others this winter.
"Faced with a horrible flu season so far this year, this new campaign perfectly illustrates the ease with which the flu can spread," Wade said Sunday.
"The flu virus is transmitted through human contact and can live for up to 48 hours on smooth, hard surfaces such as doorknobs, playground equipment and desktops.
"This year, we distributed a record number of doses of influenza vaccines to protect the most vulnerable members of our community.
"We are now asking all Southern Australians to remember that they also have an important role to play in stopping the spread of the flu."
Nicola Spurrier, Acting Chief Medical Officer of SA, stated that it was important that children stay away from school and that adults stay home as much as possible in case of flu or similar symptoms to those of the flu.
"It's important to stay out of the infection by leaving at least a meter between you and someone with flu-like symptoms," Dr. Spurrier said.
"The flu can be fatal even for a fit and healthy person.
"That's why it's so important to protect yourself and your loved ones against the disease."
The new awareness campaign will take place from July 7 to September 21 on television and radio, as well as on social media platforms.
