Member of Occupy Ghana, Sydney Casely-Hayford
Sydney Casely-Hayford, a member of the OccupyGhana lobby group, criticized Parliament for planning to build a new complex.
Speaking on The Big Issue, Mr. Casely-Hayford said that a new complex should not even be considered by Parliament.
Citizens are "alienated and dissatisfied with the functioning of Parliament," commented the social commentator.
"When I first heard that, I could not believe how irresponsible Parliament could be. This is just gross irresponsibility. "
Explaining Parliament's misplaced priorities with an example, he said, "You give money to spend and instead of buying food, they do it through an engagement ring. It's irresponsible; which is the similarity that we have here. "
The plans were justified by personalities of the legislature such as the leader of the majority, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
He argued that a new room with a capacity of 450 seats will facilitate participation in Parliament and provide more space for MPs, among other reasons.
But Mr. Casely-Hayford escaped the argument by saying, "None of them wash me."
"Parliament should rather try, at this stage, to ensure that the citizens of this country respect them. We have had so many things in Parliament that simply do not make sense, "he said.
Plans for a new complex have sparked protests from Parliament and the public.
A campaign, #DropThatChamber, was launched on social media and is expected to result in a protest on July 13th.
MPs from both sides of Parliament also expressed their opposition to the agreement.
Civil society groups also insisted that the construction of a new complex for Parliament would result in misuse of resources.
Dissent around these projects sparked controversy in Parliament on Friday after Chief of the League of Economic Fighters Ernesto Yeboah and two others were arrested by the Parliamentary Protection Unit.
Ernesto Yeboah shouted, "Let this room go" while one MP pleaded for the new complex on Parliament's floor.
