A new jukebox musical based on the songs of Adam schlesinger, the late co-founder of New York power-pop veterans Wayne’s Fountains and Emmy-winning songwriter for crazy ex-girlfriend, will premiere at the Adirondack Theater Festival, August 5-14.

The musical called, Traffic and weather, named after the 2007 album Fountains of Wayne, will feature Schlesinger’s work on a story of two people falling in love with each other.

The show will be directed by Martha Banta, Broadway veteran and co-founder of the Adirondack Theater Festival. Banta originally came up with the idea two years before Schlesinger’s tragic death on April 2, 2020 from Covid-19.

She had written to Schlesinger, whom she did not know at all, about his idea, and to her surprise he was very excited about the idea, Banta tells the Albany Times Union.

They met at his Chelsea studio in New York and came up with a basic setting for the show, while Banta worked out a script.

“You really don’t have to know Adam or his work to enjoy this show,” Banta said. Rolling stone.

“He was an incredible contemporary storyteller and his humor and his astute observations really shine through in these great pop songs. Those unfamiliar with his writing canon will leave the Wood Theater eager to discover more of his work. Plus, the acting, dancing, and production elements are so much fun.

Along with his many TV credits and band career, Schlesinger is also best known for writing one of the most iconic songs for a fictional band, The Oneders, when he wrote “That Thing You Do!” for the 1996 film of the same name.

He also wrote the music for feature films, Music and lyrics, and another early childhood classic, Josie and the pussies.

Tickets for Traffic & Weather are available now on the Adirondack Theater Festival website.
