The Electoral Commission (EC) announced the creation of a new register of voters for the general elections of 2020.

This announcement follows a stakeholder meeting with the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).

The ruling party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in opposition in 2015, called for a new register of voters, which should be ready by June 2016 at the latest.

According to the party, the voters' register of 2012 was irretrievably flawed and could not be used for the 2016 elections.

These are part of the reform proposals that the party submitted to the committee's review of the Supreme Court's recommendations after the 2012 election petition.

After examining the concerns expressed by the committee, the committee announced that the register of electors of the day would not be changed as advocated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other opposition political parties. the time.

According to a statement by the committee, the panel that reviewed the concerns and views of registry stakeholders did not find the case for a convincing new register and therefore did not recommend replacing the registry. current voters.

The panel was rather of the view that the responsibility of having a clean and credible registry is the shared responsibility of all citizens of Ghana.
