A new speed limit has been suggested for London Square Mile, announced the city of London.
If approved by the government, this would be the first area in the UK to meet a 15 mph limit.
This comes after the research showed that 90% of all trips made in the city were partially or fully traveled.
The new strategy aims to reduce traffic by 25% by 2030 and by 50% by 2044. The speed limit would be introduced by 2021 if approved.
Short-term measures to reduce traffic have already begun in the region, including temporary street closures to "make streets more attractive for walking, cycling and spending time".
Alastair Moss, of the City of London Corporation, said: "The city of London is one of the UK's best connected regions, with 15 metro stations, seven subway lines, eight main lines, several bus lines and cycling network in evolution.
"We are working tirelessly to support the 513,000 workers who go to Square Mile every day."
A delivery plan for the speed limit must be reviewed by the company's planning and transportation committee this summer.
