Washington: A new study says patients with heart disease often have difficulty thinking and suffer from depression. The study published in the journal 'Scientific Reports' also emphasizes prevention.
"Neurosurgeons always look in the brain. cardiologists always look in the heart. This new study looked at both, "said Martino, working in the field of circadian medicine.
This study is the first of its kind performed on mice that test how the biological clock regulates cognition and mood and how relevant brain regions are altered in case of heart failure.
"Human patients with heart failure often have neurological problems such as cognitive impairment and depression," said Martino.
For this new study, the researchers compared normal mice to mice carrying a mutation in their circadian mechanism (called "clock mice"). They discovered that the mutation affected the structure of neurons in brain areas important for cognition and mood.
The results show that the circadian mechanism influences the neuronal effects of heart failure, Martino said. Emphasizing that there is no cure for heart disease; She added that understanding how the circadian mechanism works in the brain could lead to new strategies to improve the quality of life of patients.
"If we are not yet able to cure heart failure, we should at least focus on improving the quality of life for patients," added Martino.
