Chewing gum is a soft, cohesive substance designed to be chewed without swallowing. Modern chewing gum consists of gum base, sweeteners, softeners / plasticizers, flavors, dyes and usually a hard or powdered polyol coating.

People chew gum for several reasons. While some chew because of bad breath, others do it for fun or just to prevent them from inadvertently falling into a light sleep.

Experts at the University of Susbad are sounding the alarm bell about aspartame, an artificial sweetener used in all fields, from soda to chewing gum.

Professors Erik Millstone and Elisabeth Dawson recently published an article in which they explain that a review of the European Food Safety Authority stating that aspartame was safe in 2013 was wrong. In their study, the duo accused the agency of relying on "very weak studies" and on[ing] the results of each of the 73 studies indicating that aspartame could be harmful. "

"About 250 people came to tell me that they thought that aspartame was a problem," Millstone told The Daily Mail. "I would describe this as strong circumstantial evidence that they had neurological symptoms and finally came to the conclusion that aspartame was responsible."

Aspartame is legal in the United States since it was approved by the FDA in 1974.
