New American ambbadador New American Ambbadador to Ghana, Stephanie S. Sullivan, with some Members of Parliament

The new US ambbadador to Ghana, Stephanie S. Sullivan, paid a courtesy call on Monday, February 4, 2019 to the leaders of Parliament and the President, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye.

Speaking at the meeting, Professor Oquaye called on both governments to return to the negotiating table in the interests of peace in order to strengthen trade between Ghana and the United States, in the the visa sanction imposed by the United States in Ghana is concerned.

The US government has imposed visa penalties in Ghana for the West African country's failure to comply with its international law obligations to accept the return of its expelled US nationals.

But the Ghanaian Foreign Ministry has described the US action as unjustified, since, according to the authorities, Ghana respects all the arrangements made to accommodate Ghanaians living illegally in the United States.

But in response, Ms. Sullivan defended the sanctions by saying that what was being imposed was the least of the options available to the United States.

She expressed confidence that Ghana's mission to Washington DC will do its utmost as soon as possible to have the sanction lifted so that Ghana and the United States continue to deepen their bilateral relations.
