FLASHBACK: President Akufo-Addo welcomed the Savelugu Naa, Yoo Naa Abubakari Mahama, to the Jubilee House when the three eminent leaders, led by Asantehene, presented him with the roadmap for peace in Dagbon
Seventeen years after the death of Yaa Naa Yakubu Andani II, the people of Dagbon are about to leave this story behind, insofar as they named the supreme chief of the Savelugu traditional region, Yoo Naa Abubakari Mahama, heir to the throne.
Naa Mahama, who is about 70 years old, has since been offered kola nuts and pieces of straw, symbol of triumph and authority, as the new lord of Dagbon.
It was after the four king makers, including the Kuga-Naa, Abdulai Adam; and Gushie Naa had consulted the oracles to guide them in choosing the right candidate for the Namship.
Naa Mahama, who, until her selection, was the head of the Andani family, succeeded her late nephew, Yaa Naa Yakubu Andani II, who died in March 2002 in Yendi.
His appointment is in keeping with the customs and traditions of succession to the Dagbon Kingship.
This is also consistent with the 1930 Dagbon Constitution and a December 1986 Supreme Court ruling that only the occupants of the Mion, Karaga and Savelugu grading skins are eligible to challenge the Dagbon Kingship.
Congratulatory message
Bolin Lana, Muhamadu Abdulai of the Abudu royal family, has since praised the Yaa Naa-elected for his selection by kingdom makers.
"I want to express my full support and loyalty to the new Yaa Naa-elected and badure him that as long as he guides us, he will see me again when he turns around," said a statement. published by Bolin Lana.
"In accordance with the best traditions of Dagbon, I have already sent a high-ranking delegation of the Abudu royal family, led by the regent of Tolon, Major Sulemana Abukari, Regent of Diare and Mba Dugu Iddrisu Iddi, officially congratulate the Yaa Naa -elect, "the statement added.
About Yaa Naa-elect
The Yaa Naa-Elus is a farmer by profession and a remarkable horseman.
Until he was appointed supreme chief of Savelugu, Naa Mahama was the head of Kponkpano, near Yendi.
After his selection, the customs and traditions forced him to leave his current residence to go to Gbewaa Palace last night, where a cow would be slaughtered and a meal prepared to the sound of the drum and narration of his ancestral history by Gong Gong drummers.
Naa Mahama will spend the night at Katini Duu (sacred hall), after which he will go to the Yendi Zohi Palace where he will be treated for about three days.
He would then be transferred to the Mba Dugu Palace before finally settling in Gbewaa Palace, where he would then be officially inaugurated.
Curfew
Meanwhile, a curfew from dusk to dawn has been imposed in and around Yendi in the Northern Region.
It is also totally forbidden for anyone in the area to carry weapons, ammunition or offensive weapons.
In a statement signed and published by Interior Minister Ambrose Dery yesterday, he warned that: "Anyone found with weapons or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.
"The Minister of the Interior has, in the opinion of the Northern Security Council (REGSEC) and by executive instrument, imposed a meeting at 17 hours. curfew at 7 am in Yendi Township and surrounding areas, beginning Friday, January 18, 2019. "

Road map
The document on the road map for peace in the troubled kingdom was developed by the Committee of Eminent Leaders led by Asantehene at the Jubilee House in Accra.
The committee was set up by former President John Kufuor in 2002 to find a lasting solution to the long-running conflict that raged in front of the Dagbon Chiefdom after the badbadination of Yaa Naa Yakubu Andani II in Yendi in March 2002.
The committee is composed of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Yagbonwura, Tuntumba Boresa Sulemana Jakpa I, supreme chief of the traditional Gonja and Nayiri zone, Na Bohugu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga, supreme chief of the Mamprugu traditional zone.
