Stephen Amankwa, a security officer with Protea Coin Group Limited, who was providing security for Newmont Ghana Gold Limited of Ahafo Mines, was reported missing last Thursday after being attacked by illegal miners. He was found dead in one of the company's mines.

The deceased, along with four other Vincent Boateng, Kwabena Boateng, Zachariah Ibrahim and Reuben Adu-Gyamfi, reportedly were badigned to their usual security patrol duties at one of Newmont's mining sites, while they allegedly attacked by illegal miners and machine-wounded. around 2:55 last Friday.

Four of them managed to escape but Amankwa was missing.

A research team including Kenyasi police, community members, workers from Newmont Ahafo Mines and the Protea Coin group later found Amankwa's dead body in one of the company's mines, Apensu , which would have been left uncovered.

The police are trying to find out if Amankwa was killed by his attackers and later thrown into the pit or fell into it while trying to escape.

Regional Police spokesman, Chief Inspector Kinsley Augustine Oppong, confirmed the sad incident to DAILY GUIDE and said that they were doing everything possible to resolve the issues surrounding the death.

In a statement, the mining company also confirmed the death of one of their "Goldcorp" and said it was badisting the police in its investigations to find out how he died.

The information collected by Daily Guide indicate that one of the critically injured casualties is currently admitted to Komfo Anokye University Hospital in Kumasi.
