Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains determined to keep him at Old Trafford as he tries to reverse the situation.
The Norwegian is even ready to make him captain if that means he remains on the spot this summer.
But with Real Madrid, including Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United has not yet received any badurance as to its future.
Keeping this in mind and in the face of an already busy recruitment window, the board has drawn up a shortlist of players who will replace Pogba if they leave, according to the Evening Standard.
Top of the list, Christian Eriksen, who made it clear that he needed a new challenge after failing in the Champions League final with Tottenham.
There is only 12 months left in the midfield of his contract, which means that Daniel Levy could be forced to sell it this summer to recover funds that Mauricio Pochettino could spend.
Another alternative is Yuri Tielemans, who had an impressive loan season with Leicester in the second half of the season when he had a real impact under new boss Brendan Rodgers.
At age 22, it would cost around £ 40 million and return to Monaco for the pre-season in the state. Tottenham and foxes are also interested in an agreement.
Eriksen recently alerted United, in which he called "Come get me" at Real Madrid.
"I feel like I'm at a place in my career where I might want to try something new," he said earlier this week.
"I have the most savage and deepest respect for everything that has happened in Tottenham. But I also said that I would like to try something new.
"I hope that there will be a clarification during the summer. That's the plan. This can happen anytime. Everyone wants it better if it happens as soon as possible, but in football, things take time.
"It depends on Daniel Levy. And another club has to come. Or I have to sit at the table and negotiate a new contract. If I have to go, then I hope it will be a step forward.
"Real Madrid is a step forward but Real Madrid needs to call Tottenham and tell him that he wants Christian, and they have not done it yet, as long as I know.
Solskjaer wants to engage young hungry British players and eager to help United reduce the gap between Manchester City and Liverpool.
However, losing Pogba would leave a huge void in the locker room that needs to be replaced by experience. There is little room for error this summer on the transfer market.
