The UK National Health Service has stated that the female contraceptive pill can be safely taken every day of the month.
The NHS rejected all previous recommendations that a seven-day break is needed in the one-month cycle, blaming the pope's confusion of all people.
In a new set of guidelines published by the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health (FSRH), it is explained that taking the pill every month is perfectly safe, and that the initial seven-day leave has only been introduced for soothe the Catholic Church.
John Guillebaud, Professor of Family Planning and Reproductive Health at University College London, has The telegraph:
"The gynecologist John Rock has designed [the break] because he hoped that the pope would accept the pill and make it acceptable to Catholics. "
The pill, which many may find (or not be) shocked to find, is still not accepted by the Catholic Church – as are all forms of artificial contraception.
Although the pill was approved by the FDA in 1960, legalized in the United Kingdom in 1961 and in Ireland in 1973, it is still true that the "Humanae Vitae" of the Catholic Church, published by the Pope in 1968 , do not tell Catholics to use contraception.
Over the last 50 years, women have been recommended to take a seven-day break in their cycle only to try to appease the pope – and it has not even worked.
The new NHS report reaffirms that "there is no health benefit" to take a break from the contraceptive pill.
Scientists also added that avoiding breaks could help reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies.
Despite the new recommendations, it could be a while before women see real changes in their own prescribed pills.
It will take some time to solve the problem of eradicating the pills announced under the name of "21/7", or seven days off 21 days.
Professor Anne MacGregor, a specialist in women's health, told The Telegraph:
"The problem is that the pills are mainly sold as a 21-day plan, seven days off. So it is very difficult for everyone to say that there is no benefit in taking a break while what women prescribe says 21/7.
