Four Nigerian rescuers kidnapped by gunmen in the south of the country were released unharmed after several days of captivity, NEMA (Emergency Management Agency) said Friday.

A NEMA official told Xinhua in Abuja that the four victims, who work for the agency, were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment after their release on Thursday.

Rescuers were abducted on April 23 by gunmen in the Ahoada area in the south of Rivers State. They were working on the national food safety intervention program in the state when gunmen hit.

"Although it's a security issue, NEMA, as a responsive government agency, has done everything in its power to be released," said Vincent Owan, director of risk management at the agency.

After a first medical examination, the doctors stated that the workers were physically weak but in good health.

Rivers State is located in the Niger Delta, rich in oil but in difficulty, where many kidnappings took place.
