Nigeria has reported 42 deaths in the last Lbada fever outbreak, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control reported on Friday.
On January 21, the center declared an epidemic of the disease that kills hundreds of people in Nigeria each year.
"Since the beginning of the 2019 epidemic, there have been 42 deaths among confirmed cases. The case fatality rate in confirmed cases is 19.7%, "he said.
A total of 538 suspected cases were reported in 16 of the 36 states, including 213 positive, 325 negative and two probable, the group said in a progress report.
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced Friday that it was deploying experts to help stem the epidemic.
Lbada fever, named after the Nigerian village where it was discovered, is transmitted by the excrement or urine of Mastomys rats, commonly known as "multi-blood rats".
Fever, headache, dizziness, sore throat, discomfort, cough, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and hearing loss are the symptoms of the disease.
