A number of people were killed and injured during a campaign demonstration by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, local officials said.

The incident occurred in a stadium in the city of Port Harcourt, in the south of the country, when the crowd headed for a portal after President Buhari's speech.

Nigeria is holding an election Saturday in which Buhari is running for a second term.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is considered the main candidate for Mr Buhari's candidacy.

What happened at the rally?

The incident occurred after President Buhari gave his speech shortly after 15:00 local time (14:00 GMT) at the Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium, local media reports.

Most of the victims would have fallen and would have been trampled by the crowd trying to make their way through a partially locked door to follow Mr. Buhari as he left the arena.

The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital.

Mr. Buhari's office later stated that the president had been informed "of the tragic death of several members of his party All Progressives Congress (APC) in a rush".
