Nigeria's largest commercial airline has signed a $ 2.1 billion deal for the delivery of 10 jet planes from Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer.

"The order was announced today at the Embraer's Africa Airline Business seminar in Mauritius. With this order, Air Peace will become the first operator E-Jets E2 in Africa, "said the company in a statement sent to AFP.

"The contract includes purchase rights for an additional 20 E195-E2. All the rights of purchase being exercised, the contract has a value of USD 2.12 billion, based on current prices, "he said.

The company said the order would be included in Embraer's order book for the second quarter of 2019.

Allen Onyema, director of Air Peace, is quoted as saying that the agreement would make the airline the first E2 operator in Africa.

"We already have the ERJ145 in our fleet, so we understand the high standards of Embraer products," he added.

Founded in 2013, Air Peace is Nigeria's largest commercial operator with 23 aircraft.

The airline is also active in West Africa and offers daily flights to Accra, Dakar, Banjul and Freetown.

In February, Embraer announced the sale of 12 light attack aircraft to the Nigerian Air Force, which fights Boko Haram jihadists in the north-east of the country.
