Nigeria's main political opposition on Saturday said that she had been forced to cancel a major rally for the presidential campaign in the capital Abuja, and accused President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling party.
Atiku Abubakar and his Democratic People's Party (PDP) were to hold the event in Garki district, one week before the vote.
But the PDP said that he had been denied access to the Old Parade Ground site, despite making payments and obtaining an official authorization.
"The PDP invites Nigerians to document this provocative action against our party and our presidential campaign by the Buhari presidency and the All Progressive Congress (APC)," he added.
Nigerians go to the polls next Saturday. Buhari, 76, is looking for a second four-year term. Abubakar, a 72-year-old former vice president, is his main challenger.
Abubakar and the PDP accused Buhari and the APC of trying to sabotage their campaign, fearing that the race would be tight.
Buhari was scheduled to hold a similar rally on Saturday in the commercial center of Lagos. Abubakar is in pencil to visit next week.
"We hope that they will allow the Lagos rally to be held on Tuesday," the party said.
Lanre Isa-Onilu, APC spokesman, said the party did not own the Abuja site, "so it's impossible to deny him access to a venue which is not our property and over which we have no control ".
"There is a truth to what the PDP said, it's not APC and it's not our policy," he told AFP. .
The authorities of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, led by APC, have made no comment in the immediate future.
