Nigerian town bans beggars and peddlers

Nigeria’s Lagos state government has banned street begging and has formed a task force to stop the “threat,” local media report.

The team is expected to begin operations in the coming days.

A state official responsible for youth and social development told reporters that beggars on the streets were a nuisance to law-abiding citizens.

Olusegun Dawodu said beggars and hawkers, including children, were being transported from other parts of the country to the city.

He said the “business” was humiliating and abusive for humanity, especially the children who were forced into it.

He added that some of the beggars and hawkers were linked to crime in the town – assaulting and robbing townspeople.

“The activities of these people in our streets obstruct human movement and the movement of vehicles, constitute environmental nuisances and threats to security,” Dawodu said, quoted by local media.

The move came days after police sounded the alarm over criminals disguising themselves as beggars and attacking residents of Lagos.
