The President of the African Development Bank, AfDB, Akinwumi Adesina, frowned on the situation where Nigerians do not have basic infrastructure despite paying taxes.
Adesina spoke Thursday at the first national tax dialogue organized by the Federal Tax Services (FIRS).
Nigerians were among the top implicit taxpayers in the world, he said. He explained that implicit taxes are levies which are incurred but which are neither seen nor recorded.
Adesina noted that in Nigeria, citizens provide themselves with electricity, roads, security, water, among others.
“Truth be told, Nigerians pay one of the highest implicit tax rates in the world – far higher than developed countries,” he said.
“Think about it: they get their electricity from generators; they repair the roads in their neighborhoods, if they can afford it; there is no social security system; they provide security for their own security; and they provide boreholes for drinking water with their own money, ”he added.
The AfDB boss further called the borehole system ridiculous, noting that boreholes are not the way to provide water in the 21st century, insisting that every household should have water. by pipeline.
He lamented that governments, over time, had simply transferred responsibility to citizens.
