On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the Nikkei's benchmark average rose sharply on Monday, the first day of a new fiscal year.
The Nikkei index finished the day at 21,509, up 303 points from Friday.
The broader TOPIX index also rose 24 points to 1,615.
A market badyst said there had been buy orders for a wide range of stocks, as a positive index on the Chinese manufacturing sector announced on Monday eased investor sentiment of mistrust as to the prospects of the economy. The badyst said the market had also bought shares on the occasion of the announcement by the government of the name of the new imperial era "Reiwa".
