Tokyo shares fell on Monday. The benchmark Nikkei Average closed at its lowest level in 4 months. Investors pulled out as the United States threatened to levy taxes on imports into Mexico, shaking markets already subject to tariffs on China.

The Nikkei's average ended Monday at 20,410, or 190 points, 0.9% lower than Friday's close. Most sectors were down, including major exporters.

The dollar fell sharply against the yen, as investors moved from stocks to safer areas, such as the Japanese currency and bonds.

US President Donald Trump last week threatened to impose additional tariffs on all goods from Mexico as of June 10.

He said Mexico was not doing enough to stem the flow of illegal immigration to the United States.
