"Game of Thrones" has not always been the global phenomenon that it is today.
Like many series, "Game of Thrones" started as a single pilot that was pitched to a range of networks in the hope that one of them would pick it up.
It may seem surprising to some, but it's no secret that the show's pilot was a total trainwreck.
In an episode of the podcast "Scriptnotes," the show's co-creator David Benioff said that watching the pilot was "one of the most painful experiences" of his life.

Fortunately, the pilot never saw the light of day. So much of it had been rehearsed and reproduced that a different director was up and running.
However, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (who plays Jaime Lannister) said "The Late Late Show with James Corden" on Wednesday.
"It was unbelievably bad," Coster-Waldau said.
"It was actually amazing and there was no reason we were not going to pick that up."
Luckily, someone did.
Coster-Waldau said that one guy, Richard Pleper the CEO of HBO, was like: "This is great! Let's do it."
The rest, as they say, is history.
