England Nilüfer Yanya appeared for the first time on our radar in 2017 at Iceland Airwaves, where Consequence of the soundLior Phillips himself describes it as "an Amy Winehouse adjacent to an indie rock." We will finally be able to see what this soulful pop soul artist really has to offer when she releases her first album, Miss UniverseMarch 22 via ATO Records.
The 17-track effort was recorded in the remote Cornwall, UK studio, where Yanya was already playing when she was just starting to kiss her music. The co-production comes from Dave Okumu, In Invisible, his former guitar teacher, and his fellow bandmates, Jazzi Bobbi and Luke Bower. Other producers include John Congleton, Oli Barton-Wood, Will Archer and M.T. Hadley
For the first time, the 23-year-old artist shared the video of the first single "In Your Head". The frantic clip – which was shot in Las Vegas and the surrounding area – is a perfect complement to the feverish exploration of the track in relation to reality. "I can do what I want / I can feel what I feel / Until you say it out loud / How will I know if it's true?" Yanya sings.
Speaking of the song in a press release, she says:
"Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me and I get trapped. There are things I need to be disguised as things I think I want, things I think I choose by choice, not necessity. Sometimes it only becomes clear after the fact, or maybe it will never be. Some people may call it paranoid. I think that's what I wrote the song for, but what interests me, and what I think I was trying to understand, is the illusion of freedom. "
