Kochi: District collector Mohammed Y Safirulla described social media publications regarding the confirmation of infection in Nipah as unfounded in a patient admitted to a private hospital in Ernakulam.

Patients with any Nipah symptom would be subjected to additional tests to confirm the condition and this was part of the standard procedure, said the collector. "There is no need to panic about development," Safirulla said.

If the tests prove that the patient is suffering from Nipah, the district administration will issue an official notification and resort to preventive measures, added the tax collector. He also urged those engaged in spreading fear to give up their actions.

Meanwhile, the direction of the private hospital where the patient is being treated has declined to comment on social media publications.

According to reports, a person with encephalitis would have been admitted to a star hospital in Ernakulam a few days ago. The body fluids of the person were sent for a detailed examination, but the results are not yet known.

Authorities at the private hospital said his medical council, which includes the district doctor, would meet soon and the facts related to the case would be communicated later.

However, the Ernakulam regional doctor stated Manorama online that no official decision had been taken on this subject. "Social media users should not commit to panicking the population on this issue," he said.
