North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw the launch of "a new type of tactically guided weapon," a "solemn warning to the warmongers of the South Korean army," announced the official news agency.
Kim "personally organized and guided" the shooting of the "ultramodern weapons system" on Thursday, said KCNA, referring to the two short-range missiles launched into the sea. This is the first time that Pyongyang is testing its missiles since an impromptu meeting between Kim and Donald Trump in June in the demilitarized zone between North Korea and South Korea.
The North warned that the US-South Korean war games could affect the planned resumption of denuclearization talks between Washington and Pyongyang.
Kim was "pleased" with the test result, the official news agency said.
Kim complained that the South Korean authorities "are behaving in such a strange double deal" by talking about peace, but "then behind the scenes, dispatching state-of-the-art offensive weapons and organizing joint military exercises."
The South Korean "general manager" – presumably a reference to South Korean President Moon Jae-in – "should not make mistakes by ignoring Pyongyang's warning," KCNA said.
Kim said North Korea should "develop ultra-strong non-stop weapons systems to eliminate direct and potential threats" to national security from South Korea.
On Friday, the South Korean and US military command said Thursday's missile launches were not a threat to South Korea or the United States and had "no impact on our defense posture."
Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff had previously confirmed that the North "fired an unidentified projectile at 5:34 am and the other at 5:57 am from the Wonsan area to the East Sea, and they had traveled about 430 km.
The United States said the missiles were "short range".
