Northern Macedonia declares the measles epidemic

Health authorities in North Macedonia have declared a nationwide measles epidemic in the small Balkan country, after more than 960 cases have been registered since the beginning of this year.

Vladimir Mikic, an epidemiologist at the Ministry of Health's infectious diseases commission, said on Tuesday that in response to the outbreak, unvaccinated children would not be allowed in day care and that additional resources would be allocated immunization programs.

Health officials had previously warned the public of the risks badociated with popular anti-vaccination campaigns in North Macedonia. According to the Institute of Public Health, more than 11,000 preschool children have not been vaccinated and three babies have died as a result of the disease.

An epidemic had already been declared in six regions of the country, including the capital, Skopje.
