STEAM VESSEL SPRINGS – Outbreaks of mumps are reported in Colorado and in other states. Mumps is a contagious virus that causes painful swelling of the cheeks and jaws. The disease usually starts with a few days of fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue and loss of appetite, followed by swelling of the salivary glands.
If you or your child are worried about mumps, contact your health care provider. Getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent mumps. Although the disease is rare in the United States, it is still common in other parts of the world.
Epidemics occur when travelers who have not been vaccinated against mumps are infected with the disease and bring it to the United States where it spreads to other people who are not protected. The Centers for Disease Control recommends that children receive two doses of MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine, starting with the first dose of 12 months to 15 months and the second dose of four to six years. Colorado requires children to have the MMR vaccine to go to daycare or school. Adolescents and adults should also be up-to-date regarding MMR vaccination.
