An activist from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) endorsed statements by Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu that it would be counterproductive for the party to present an Akan as a standard bearer for the 2024 elections.
Mr Razak Opoku said the parliamentary affairs minister was right when he preferred the reasons why the NPP in 2024 should present a candidate of a different ethnicity to disalienate himself from the tribalist label.
“Internally, I know I have the competence to lead the party, but is it wise that after two Akans – former President Kufuor and current President Akufo-Addo – to present a standard-bearer candidate from different ethnicity.
“I think this is not good for a party that has been accused by some of being too Akanist in nature. But not everyone would agree with me and that is the beauty of democracy, ”the majority leader told Emefa Apawu on Investigation.
The Suame MP explained that it would be prudent for the NPP to wean itself from the label of the “Akan party” by selecting a candidate from a different tribe for the elections.
Adding his voice to the appeals, Mr Opoku said the perception that the NPP is the prerogative of Akans has over the years worked against party interests and it was important for the party to be diverse.
“As a party, we cannot continue to present the Akan standard bearers all the time since the party was formed. This is not good for the overall image and the brand of the Party.
“We must take pragmatic measures to diversify our choice of flag bearer in order to improve our parliamentary performance in the 16 regions”, underlined Mr. Razak Opoku.
He said the NPP’s inability to win parliamentary seats in Oti and sometimes struggled to win seats in the Volta, Upper East, North, Upper West and non-Akan areas were all due to the label “ Akanfou ” hung on the neck of the party for the past 74 years.
