The National Union of Ghanaian Students (NUGS) has appealed to the Association of University Teachers of Ghana (UTAG) and the Association of University Executives of Ghana to reconsider their national strike.

According to NUGS, although the demands of the two unions are legitimate, they should take into account the interests of Ghanaian students.

Members of UTAG and the University Senior Staff Association of Ghana are expected to go on indefinite strike from today, Monday, August 2, 2021.

In a July 30 statement, UTAG ordered all its members to comply with the strike.

UTAG members on all campuses must withdraw from teaching and other activities such as exams, supervision, marking exam papers and processing exam results.

But NUGS in a press release issued on Monday, August 2, 2021, urged the two unions to reconsider their decision as a “mark of good faith towards students”.

“… We do not agree with the approach of the strike, given its effects on students, especially in the abnormal times we find ourselves in and the previous obstruction of academic work by the global shutdown. UTAG and SSA-UoG must, as an act of good faith towards students and the government, avoid an entrenched position in all dialogues to address their concerns.

“We call on our teachers to stay in the classroom for the sake of the next generation as they continue to negotiate with the appropriate quarters, as Ghanaian students should not always be the origin of the reception. What are the requirements of UTAG, senior university staff?

UTAG called on the government to restore the conditions of service agreed with the government in 2012.

The 2012 terms of service set the base plus market premium for a speaker at $ 2,084.42.

UTAG complained that the current arrangement reduced its members’ base premiums to $ 997.84.

For their part, senior university officials have called for the granting of market bonuses and non-essential allowances, as well as the finalization of negotiations on their terms of service.

The association had previously accused the government of “total disregard and contempt of the directives of the National Labor Commission (NLC) on January 28, 2021, after hearing both sides resolve all our concerns within a stipulated three-month period, which s ‘sadly also elapsed on March 31, 2021.
