A 31-year-old nurse at Zebilla Hospital in the Upper East region’s Bawku West district died after suspected armed robbers shot her at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday.
The Ghanaian News Agency (GNA) concluded that the nurse, identified as Ishmael Bashiru Pumi, who was heading from Bolgatanga to Zebilla, unknowingly went to an ongoing robbery in Tilli Forest where men armed, suspected of being Fulani, had blocked the road with their cattle. .
Mr Paul Asio, a close friend of the deceased nurse, who was in the car with him, recounting the incident, said: “When we approached the truck I told Prince it was of a broken down vehicle, he should therefore be careful. . As soon as we got around it, the Peuls shot Prince directly in the head. He lost control and the car stopped. I lowered myself so that the bullet grazed my forehead ”.
He said the thieves numbered about five, with two guns: “They came to the car, took out Prince, in a pool of blood, they took me out, searched our bags, they took our money and our phones.
“When they saw the way Prince was bleeding, one of the thieves was speaking the Kusaal language saying they should return my phone to me so Prince could be taken to the hospital or else he will die. I called a friend to go to the police station and make a report, so within 30 minutes the police came and took six of us to Zebilla hospital.
Mr. Denis Kpireu-Ib Benyuur, President of West Bawku District of the Ghana Association of Nurses and Midwives (GRNMA) confirmed to the GNA that Mr. Pumi was then transferred from Zebilla hospital to the hospital. Tamale University where he died.
He said the nurse who died worked in the pediatric unit at Zebilla Hospital, adding that he worked in the morning on the day of the attack.

Mr Benyuur called on the Zebilla Police Command to strengthen security on the Bolgatanga-Zebilla road which he said has recorded several thefts over the years.
He further urged the district nurses and midwives not to give in to their mandate despite the challenges.
Upper East Regional Police Public Relations Officer Deputy Superintendent of Police (ASP) David Fianko Okyere, who confirmed the theft incident, said: will come out with information.
Some colleagues of the deceased hospital nurse have described him as a hardworking nurse who doubles as a musician who performs in entertainment shows across the region and beyond to the admiration of his audiences.
