HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – Since the beginning of 2019, Nebraska has been considered "widespread" for influenza activity in the state. It is the most active state of the Midwest.
There are only ten other states listed as widespread.
According to the Department of Health and Social Services, there were 14 flu-related deaths for all ages in Nebraska as of January 14th.
The Center for Disease Control urges people to get vaccinated against the flu or to take additional measures to avoid catching it. This year's flu outbreak is milder than last season, which has been severe in most parts of the country.
"The CDC actually say we do not see as many cases as last year, so that tells me that they think the flu shot is more effective this year," said Janet Riese, responsible for infection control among health service employees. "What is worrisome is that the people who received the flu shot understood that."
Nurses say the flu vaccine can be given at any time of the season.
"No, they can definitely get the flu shot in the facilities that provide them," said Riese. "Your doctor's office or pharmacies can give them. Mary Lanning employees are invited to come here, along with our volunteers, to get the flu shot. "
Even though it may be difficult to stay away from work, nurses strongly encourage people to stay home if their fever exceeds 100.1. Fever must be less than this figure without medication to return to work
Children and people over 65 are the most likely to get the flu. People with weakened immune systems should also take precautions for the rest of the season.
