Deputy Secretary General of the New Patriotic Party
New Patriotic Party (NPP) Deputy Secretary General Nana Obiri Boahene is concerned about the silence of the majority of NPP MPs on the bill criminalizing gay activities.
According to him, apart from NPP MP John Ntim Fordjour, all other names mentioned when the question arises are those of an NDC MP.
Speaking to Kwesi Parker Wilson of JoyNews, he said: “I am surprised not to see a good number of NPP MPs championing this cause, I am worried.”
Mr Boahene, who has described the practice of gayism and lesbianism as embarrassing, insulting and nauseating, wants the majority of NPP MPs to make their voices heard.
The bill in parliament is led by six MPs, including only one NPP MP, John Ntim Fordjour.
It comes after members of the clergy and Islamic clerics presented memos to the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution and Legal Affairs on Wednesday in support of the bill.
The Pentecostal Church has said it is ready to vote against any political party that opposes the passage of the bill.
However, a series of memoranda, which oppose the legislation, were also presented to the Committee.
The authors of the memoranda describe the bill as an endorsement of state-sponsored violence against minority groups and an infringement of their human rights.
However, Nana Obiri Boahene believes that since discussions about LGBTQ + are not limited to NPP or NDC, all well-meaning Ghanaians should join the talks to ban their activities.
“No one should even encourage that we shouldn’t talk about it, we should stop it. How can we discuss this even in the public domain, ”he added.
Mr Boahen also urged Akoto Ampaw and his colleagues leading the charge to oppose the Anti LGBTQ + bill, to drop their stance.
He said “please my good brothers and sisters, this has nothing to do with religion, it has nothing to do with politics, it has something to do with respect and good sense, let it go “.
