Observe February 17 as National Mathematics Day – GES charges directors of education
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has requested all regional and district directors of education to observe February 17 of this year as National Mathematics Day in all undergraduate and graduate schools in country.
He reminded the directors of education that “the day is reserved for math activities only in our schools across the country.”
A letter dated February 8, 2021 to all regional directors of education signed by the Director of Schools and GES Instructions, Ms. Patty E. Assan, indicated that a national virtual durbar with stakeholders would be organized at the Unit science education in Accra alongside the activities of regional and district schools.

He said National Mathematics Day, which should have been celebrated on February 14, 2021, had been moved to Wednesday February 17, 2021, since February 14 fell on a Sunday.

The poor performance of students in the subject over the years is a testament to the challenge that students have with the subject.
There was, however, an improvement on the subject last year, where performance rose from 65.31% in 2019 to 65.71% in 2020.
Mathematical Society
The Science Education Unit (National STEM Center) of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in collaboration with the Ghana Mathematics Society (GMS) has set aside February 14 of each year to be celebrated as National Mathematics Day .
The goal of celebrating the day is to raise awareness of the importance of math.
During the day, the letter stated that elementary and senior students and teachers should participate in math activities to celebrate the day, including hands-on or hands-on sessions and that “that should be done in kindergarten. at the secondary secondary level (SHS). .
He said principals could hold a debate on the motion “mathematics is a necessity for nation building” and that this should be done from undergraduate to SHS level.
Again, he said there should be a math quiz competition for JHS and SHS students and “it should be done at school with two students from each class”.
