Child Online Africa (COA) congratulates the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child for the adoption of General Comment No. 25 (2021) on the rights of the child in relation to the digital environment.
We view digital security and literacy as a critical part of the growth and development of children and we are delighted that, for the first time in history, children’s digital experiences are recognized in the United Nations Convention on to the rights of the child (CRC). .
As this historic moment puts a feather in the hat for all CSOs, members of the Child Protection Online Initiative working group and other stakeholders working to protect children on the Internet, we tend to remind central governments across Africa to be guided by some of the recommendation. This;
– Meaningful access to digital technologies can empower children and help them realize all of their civil, political, cultural, economic and social rights.
– States are taking strong legislative and administrative measures guided by Safety By Design principles to protect children from harmful and deceptive content online.
– Businesses should not profile or target children for commercial purposes based on children’s digital recordings.
As an organization working in the field, we are happy to contribute to the General Comment and see it as a tool that helps promote international cooperation on online security while creating harmonization on these issues, in particular as threats to the safety of children online both national and international borders.
We hope that ALL countries in Africa will start implementing the principles to ensure a trusted digital environment for Africa.
