Facebook's new Oculus Quest virtual reality (VR) headset seems to appeal to early users, causing inventory shortages at a number of retailers. A week after its official launch, the headphones were sold Tuesday at Amazon, Walmart and Newegg.
A Facebook spokesman acknowledged inventory issues in a statement sent to Variety"We are very excited to see the excitement and interest in Oculus Quest. Some of our retail partners are temporarily out of stock online, but we are working to restore availability in all channels as quickly as possible. That said, people can still buy Quest on Oculus.com and in many stores around the world. "
Newegg said both versions of the Quest (64GB and 128GB) were out of stock on Tuesday. Amazon listed the 64GB version as "temporarily unavailable," but promised to ship the 128GB version within one to two months. Walmart has listed both models as unavailable for online orders or in-store pickups.

Best Buy promised to ship the helmet within a week, but noted on its website that there was no inventory in-store within 250 km of Los Angeles or the Francisco Bay area. Facebook's Oculus.com website appeared unresponsive to stockouts and promised to ship either model in early June.
It is still too early to say what these inventory problems mean for Quest's absolute sales figures and the impact the device could have on the RV market as a whole. Some retailers may have been cautious in estimating consumer demand for the Quest after experiencing a timid demand for previous helmets. What's more, the first users of virtual reality are responsible for the sales of the device the first week, and Facebook should sell much more during the holiday season.
