Aside from David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust era, cocaine and space exploration really aren’t meant to mix. Can you imagine what Neil Armstrong’s famous quote would have been like if he got high during his baby step on the moon? “It’s a small step… damn shit, man, I’m on the moon; I feel fucking invincible! Buzz, Buzz, Buzz, do you have any more? Let’s make lines on moon rocks!” Yet, for the second time in just over a year, cocaine has been discovered at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
NASA reports that 4.2 grams of a powdery substance was found at the Cape Canaveral Space Center. The first tests showed a positive result for cocaine, but the substance is currently undergoing further testing.
NASA officials are refusing to release information about where the cocaine was found, nor will they say how many employees will be tested for drugs.
A spokesperson for the agency will also not comment on whether the drug could be linked to a fatal crash last Monday. An employee of a company under contract with NASA died while working on a launch pad.
Surprisingly, this is not the first time in recent memory that cocaine has been discovered at the space center. Last year, a bag containing cocaine residue was found in a hangar housing the Discovery shuttle. No worker tested positive for the drug, and NASA has closed that investigation with no response as to how the drug entered a high-security area.
