JACKSON, Miss.

Mississippi officials said they were investigating whether a traveler pbading through Mississippi was able to infect people with measles.

Dr. Thomas Dobbs, a public health officer, said Friday that the traveler was contagious and had visited a Subway restaurant in Hattiesburg on April 9 and a Ringering Cane's Chicken Fingers in Hattiesburg on April 10.

Mississippi has not reported any cases of measles despite a nationwide outbreak. Health officials said Monday that 555 cases of measles had been confirmed in the United States since the beginning of the year, the highest rate in 25 years.

Dobbs warns that unvaccinated people have a 90% chance of becoming infected. He says anyone exposed should take immediate precautions. Anyone who may have been exposed should contact a doctor or emergency room before returning to take the necessary precautions to avoid other infections.
