Apple has taken its first steps in providing point-of-sale systems, or PDS, to other retailers. Systems are modified iPod Touch that allows employees to cancel purchases, accept credit signatures, and wirelessly print receipts to printers posted in the store; If that sounds familiar to you, it's because it's the same EasyPay system that Apple uses in many of its own retail stores, even though it's renamed "ZipCheck."
According to the company's 9to5Mac confirmation, Apple's first point-of-sale system customer is Old Navy, owned by Gap, a company that Steve Jobs served on the board from 1999 to 2002.
The system is currently being tested in only a few Old Navy stores, but if it succeeds, do not be surprised if, next year, the credit card authorization you sign is done with your finger on an iPod Touch.
