On the occasion of the anniversary of the birthday of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah

Today we celebrate the birthday of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Let us take this opportunity to reflect on the type of society we have today and what we want to build for future generations. I won’t go deep into the greatness of Nkrumah: the gigantic attempts he made to industrialize Ghana, the massive job creation and his steadfastness in us controlling the heights of our economy.

But we have to ask ourselves, is this the future that Nkrumah fought for today?

What Nkrumah envisioned is far from our reality. Our hard-won “democracy” was paid for with our lives, then crippled by the Rawlings dictatorship. Subsequently, an already not so perfect Constitution was further hijacked and destroyed by the team nature of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

What we have in Ghana today is monetary policy. Where even officials at the local level of the NPP / NDC have to buy votes from their members, to represent them. What a condemnable paradox! You want to serve your people, but you have to pay your party members to elect you, to serve them. It’s Armageddon.

Our society has been traumatized by the actions and activities of the NPP / NDC. They have pushed the country to the brink of collapse. The class interest they represent, as representatives of the elites, and the mismanagement of the country, in the interest of the dominant elites, destroy the country even in its moral fabric.

How then to explain that the P / NDC and the NPP have been in power since 1982 and have been so blinded that they have facilitated the aggravation and destruction of our environment. Our topical forest has been destroyed. There is nothing in return to show for our deforested country. Galamsey and irresponsible large-scale mining have been stepped up relentlessly. Our country is about to import water and all the abundant resources that once accompanied our natural rivers. Our mineral resources continue to be exploited for the benefit of foreign capitalist interests; and what do we gain in return? Nothing less than paltry bribes to these rapacious elites. That is why they only traded 13% of our oil resources and less than 5% of our mineral resources. Sadly, this misery is still disproportionately plundered for the benefit of ruling elites.

Unemployment has reached the ceiling. Thousands of our young people find themselves desperate to find a job opportunity and a significant proportion risk their lives to take dangerous trips outside the country. A country where national TV news ends with people begging for money; to seek treatment in Ghana and abroad. What type of country is it?

And what do we have? A cheerful elite who flaunt their wealth unreservedly, as if there was no tomorrow. They travel the country to buy votes and favors. And the citizens respond helplessly in their desperation and vote for these hostile charlatans who have plagued our nation.

On the occasion of the anniversary of the birthday of our greatest patriot, my bugle calls on the masses of our people to wake up from their deep sleep. It is only through organization that we can move our country forward. There are a number of progressive and pro-Nkrumah organizations, such as the Ghana Social Justice Movement (SJMG) and the Progressive Alliance for Ghana (PAG) who want to bring about change.

Nkrumah has shown the way. He taught us that organization determines everything. He broke with the anachronistic United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and formed the Convention Peoples’ Party (CPP), which propelled the country towards its independence.

A few committed people, joined by the popular masses, can bring about real change. A change in which ordinary people determine how the country is to be run. A change that will ensure that all of our natural resources are wisely used and managed for the benefit of the people; and it creates jobs for them. A change that will ensure that our education and health care is free for all citizens, from cradle to grave.

We have nothing to lose except our chains!

Thoughts of a Native Son.
