An accident yesterday on the road from Kumasi to Sunyani killed a 51-year-old woman and injured 16 others.
The deceased was identified as Ms. Yaa Gyamfuah, a resident of Agric in the Kwadaso Municipality.
The accident occurred on the stretch between Tabere and Atwima-Koforidua around 5.30am. A bus 207 loaded with plantain and traveling from Sunyani to Kumasi hit a Nissan Urvan bus carrying pbadengers and traveling to Sunyani.
Police Briefing
Chief Inspector Noah Oteng Asiedu of the Abuakwa District Traffic and Motor Transport Division told the press that the accident occurred when the driver of bus 207 arrived at a point near Mount Sinai Hospital on the Atwima Koforidua section. road, decided to avoid a pothole.
The vehicle then hit the oncoming Nissan bus lane.
According to him, the two vehicles collided and the impact sent the Nissan bus into a ditch, causing injury to the pbadengers.
He stated that the wounded had been sent to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment and that Yaa Gyamfuah had been declared dead at the hospital.
Absence of driver
According to Chief Inspector Asiedu, the bus driver 207, identified as Kwaku Sarpong, escaped from the scene after the accident, while the driver of the other bus, Dickson Banahene, injured, is currently being treated at the hospital the other pbadengers.
The vehicles have since been towed to the Abuakwa Police Station.
