Genetic testing shows that one in ten is mistaken about the man he believes to be their father, according to an NHS chief.

And doctors face an ethical crisis because they do not always know what to do when the truth is discovered.

It had been estimated that four percent of people were unaware that they were not related to the man they called "daddy."

But Ian Cumming, head of Health Education England, said the figure was much higher.

He said, "If you look at people who have had genetic testing in their family for reasons other than trying to determine fatherhood, one in ten dads is not what you believe .

"Are we going to tell people, 'This is not your father,' or are we going to keep this information for ourselves?"

Each year, the NHS conducts about 220,000 tests to detect hereditary diseases.

But it is unclear how many people, if any, are aware of the paternity confusion, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Mark Bellis, an expert in the field, said, "Despite the genomics that creep into many aspects of health care, we seem to choose to ignore what it reveals about infidelity and fatherhood."
