Ibrahim Ismail, a 20-year-old man convicted of eating mango during the Islamic holy month, received 40 lashes for his crime.
Imail, accused of having eaten while other healthy Muslims were fasting, was found guilty by a Sharia upper court in Ringim District, in the state of Jigawa.
Premium Times reports that Judge Safiyanu Ya'u ordered that the victim be flogged 40 times in a market place in order to dissuade others.

According to him, the action of the victim violates article 370 of the Criminal Code of the State of Jigawa.
According to the news media, the flogging exercise allegedly took place on the market square in Ringim after a justice official read to the public the "crime" committed by Ismail.
