The company that runs the Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza hotel chains announced this week that its 843,000 rooms would provide shampoo and other toiletries in large containers, eliminating millions of plastic bottles from landfills. .

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), one of the largest hotel groups in the world, will phase out its 5,600 locations worldwide. The transition will be completed within two years.

At present, IHG uses an average of 200 million bathroom miniatures throughout its hotel business each year. With the adoption of the new brand standard by 2021, the company hopes to see a significant reduction in plastic waste.

In October 2018, IHG announced the removal of disposable plastic straws from its hotels around the world. On average, 50 million straws have been removed from IHG's hotel inventory each year, enough to reach from New York to Tokyo.
